Enjoy fresh, local food during your stay at Calibishie Cove
Whether you dine under the stars on your private balcony on a delicious local meal served by our staff, cook in your room's kitchen (Paradise Penthouse and our Rainforest Suite offer kitchens), or go out for dinner, you're sure to to find the fresh, local, tropical, hearty fare to your liking.
Keep in mind that the grocery selection in Dominica is fairly limited to basic staples. We recommend eating on-site or eating out for most of your meals. Breakfast is included in room rates (reservations made on or after January 9th, 2011).
Custom dining under the stars, on your private terrace
Fancy a gourmet meal prepared to your specifications and served to you on your balcony or in your room? Our chef Hazel offers a full dinner menu of delectable local dishes from her on-site kitchen and will serve you breakfast with the hummingbirds or dinner under the stars. Packed-to-go boxed lunches are available for your day out exploring. (Photo courtesy Crown Images)
Cooking in your suite's kitchen
Our Paradise Penthouse suite has a full gourmet kitchen and dining room, equipped with all you need to cook for and serve a whole family. If you would like to cook while staying in the Penthouse, this page will tell you what you need to know.
The Sea View rooms are equipped for breakfast and lunch sandwich prep, if you would you like to do so, with a mini-refrigerator, silverware, and full setup to make tea, coffee, or oatmeal.
Grocery shopping in Dominica
There are two grocery stores in town: Alford's and Coral Reef. You will usually find fresh locally-made breads and desserts, and local fruit there, in addition to the basics. Coral Reef has a lovely bar out back as well. Look for roadside and walking vendors selling just-picked peppers, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, and fruit.
Keep a special watch for Faustin selling fruit at the far end of town, near Glenda's Atlantic View restaurant (see below), as he offers delicious ripe fruit at a very low price. Let him know Calibishie Cove sent you!
If you would like fresh fish or lobster to cook in your suite's kitchen, please let Hazel know in advance and she can likely source it for you.
Planning a stay of more than a few days, and cooking meals in your suite? Your best bet is to head into the capital, Roseau, to stock up on a more extensive selection of groceries at Whitchurch or Brizee's and hit the wonderful produce market. Portsmouth also has a produce market early Saturday morning.
Restaurants
Calibishie Cove's property manager Hazel will discuss your restaurant options with you on arrival, and help with reservations. They're required a day or so in advance at most restaurants, as most local establishments order fresh fish, lobster, and meats daily on an as-needed basis. Phone numbers for these restaurants and a host of options in Portsmouth can be found in the guest guide in your room.
Atlantic View Restaurant
Glenda's Atlantic View restaurant is another highly recommended choice in town. It's at the far end of town, past the village (approx. eight-minute drive). Make sure to try the lobster. Full bar. Faustin, the best fruit vendor in town, is often set up next to Glenda's in the afternoon.
Escape
Bar and restaurant on the beach at Pointe Baptise, walking distance (10-15 minutes) from Calibishie Cove. A festive atmosphere and skilled bar staff make for a special place. Try the rum punch.
Bamboo Restaurant
Owned by Belgians, Bamboo Restaurant offers a good last-minute option, five minutes' drive from Calibishie Cove. Reservations are not required (but are recommended) and quality is consistent. European comfort food is available as well as local-style fare. Full bar.
